About the song:
“Mother Death” is a solemn and magnetic hymn that sees death not as an end, but as a sacred beginning, an integral part of the eternal cycle uniting light and darkness, life and decay. Here, Death has a voice and a face: not horror, but embrace; not punishment, but return.
Inspired in part by Demetra George’s “Mysteries of the Dark Moon,” the song channels the spirit of an ancient feminine ritual, where the boundary between life and afterlife dissolves. Ethereal and ritualistic, “Mother Death” walks barefoot on the edge of existence, a calm, inevitable transformation rather than a farewell.

About the album:
With Abyss Calls to Abyss, their third full-length album, Skulld bring to completion a path that began in 2019, a journey through old-school death metal, esoteric mysticism, and radical punk-rooted activism. Written and recorded in 2025, the album unfolds as an eight-track odyssey exploring the furthest edges of human and spiritual experience through a feminist, pagan, and anti-authoritarian lens.

The abyss evoked by the album is not only an external, cosmic void, but also an inner, personal, and collective chasm, the place where death and rebirth collide, where wounds and healing, desire and destruction intertwine. Each song delves deep into the essence of being, merging ancestral ritualism, female mythology, social critique, and archetypal symbolism into a single, cohesive vision.

Central themes include:
Death as a transformative force, within a non-linear, cyclical concept of time (Mother Death, Accabadora).
Shamanic and archetypal feminine power (Healing the Wound, Sacred Fires).
Magic as resistance, vengeance, and revolution (The Blink, Le Diable and the Snake).
Deviant motherhood and the dark side of love (Drops of Sorrow).
Cosmic darkness as a force to wear and walk through (Wear the Night as a Velvet Cloak).

Abyss Calls to Abyss is far more than a death metal album, it is a ritual, a manifesto, and a sonic-spiritual exploration that challenges the dogmas of patriarchal society and celebrates darkness as a dimension of awareness, power, and healing.

The record is visually enriched by an original oil painting from Neapolitan artist Roberto Toderico, who perfectly captures the atmosphere of Abyss Calls to Abyss. The artwork depicts an almost lunar landscape where the violent gesture of a hooded woman slitting a demon’s throat contrasts with a dreamlike, surreal, oceanic aura; a setting in which the abyss is both visually and symbolically ever-present.

Inside the album, each song is accompanied by a brief explanation of its themes and sources of inspiration, which include:

Classical and pagan mythology (Circe and Scylla in The Blink, Accabadora).
Shamanic mountain and Mediterranean traditions (Sacred Fires).
Feminist and esoteric literature (Mysteries of the Dark Moon by Demetra George, La Dea della Montagna by Michela Zucca, La torre d’avorio by Paola Barbato).
Tarot and arcane symbolism (Le Diable and the Snake).
Inner visions and initiatory experiences lived as personal journeys.

An album as ritual
The entire work can be perceived as a shamanic path through shadow, where each track represents a threshold, an archetype, an initiation, or a revelation. The title Abyss Calls to Abyss echoes the biblical phrase “deep calls unto deep,” reinterpreted here in a pagan and feminist key: only by crossing the abyss can we recognize and transform what dwells within us. It is an invitation not to fear the descent into darkness, but to embrace it as the necessary passage toward rebirth.
