=====
Centred around doom, sludge, and avant-garde metal, Under could have been just another heavy band — but their deep-seated need to splinter off into psych and prog elements pushes them far beyond the ordinary. Their warped time signatures and uneasy harmonies create an underlying sense of dread and nausea that defines everything they do. There are clear nods to Melvins, and that’s never a bad thing.
Their 2017 debut Slick was a twisted, sinister showcase of heavy experimentation — shifting between harsh, unclean vocals and eerie group harmonies that feel disturbingly off-kilter. Stop Being Naive (2018) picked up where Slick left off, leading listeners further down the rabbit hole with disorienting rhythm and atmosphere. Its opening track Malcontents demanded attention — and once you were in, there was no way out.
In 2020, with their next album paused by the pandemic, Under released Training Resource #5 — a short, sharp EP that both satisfied long-time fans and drew in a new audience. Two years later came their split single with Opium Lord, featuring The Ref: a five-minute distillation of Under’s brand of dark, uneasy listening.
Under, the band that helped launch APF Records, are a truly unique force in the UK heavy scene — a trio unafraid to push every boundary of sound, structure, and sanity. Back in the studio in 2024, they’ll return in early 2026 with their third full-length album. It’s terrifying (and thrilling) to imagine where they’ll go next.
