The Yellow Monkey is a seminal Japanese rock band from Tokyo, originally formed in 1988. Known for their electrifying live performances and eclectic style, they blend hard rock, glam rock, and alternative rock with progressive touches. Their theatrical image—complete with glam-inspired makeup and fashion—recalls influences like David Bowie and T. Rex, yet their music remains distinctly Japanese in melody and lyricism. After a hiatus in 2004, they reunited in 2016 and continue to tour and record. With over 10 million records sold and multiple chart-topping albums, The Yellow Monkey remains one of Japan’s most influential rock acts.
